Pincushion Man in Balloon Land T-Shirt
A Forgotten Character From the Golden Age of Animation
Meet Pincushion Man — one of the strangest villains to emerge from the golden age of American animation.
This original Don Capone T-shirt design reinterprets imagery from the bizarre and wonderfully surreal 1935 animated short Balloon Land, also known as The Pincushion Man.
Rather than simply reproducing the original animation, Don Capone has taken elements of the historic character and artwork and modified and reworked them into a completely new graphic composition designed specifically for a T-shirt.
The result is a piece of vintage animation history transformed into modern graphic art.

Balloon Land — The Pincushion Man, 1935
Balloon Land is a fascinating piece of early American animation history. The short was produced by legendary animator Ub Iwerks and released on September 30, 1935 as part of the ComiColor Cartoons series.
The cartoon takes place in a bizarre world where the inhabitants of Balloon Land are made from balloons. People, animals, trees and other elements of the landscape all exist within this wonderfully strange balloon-filled universe.
But Balloon Land has a villain.
That villain is the Pincushion Man, a sinister character carrying sharp pins and threatening to pop the inhabitants of Balloon Land.
The character was voiced by legendary voice actor Billy Bletcher, whose remarkable career included many classic animation roles. The musical score for Balloon Land was by Carl W. Stalling.
The short was produced using hand-drawn cel animation and photographed in Cinecolor, giving it the distinctive appearance of 1930s color animation.
Balloon Land is also known by the alternate title The Pincushion Man, making the character featured in this artwork particularly interesting to collectors and fans of obscure animation history.
From 1935 Animation to Modern Graphic Art
The idea behind this shirt was to take an unusual piece of animation history and give it a new life as graphic art.
Don Capone has taken selected elements of the original Pincushion Man imagery and modified, rearranged and reworked them into a new composition created specifically for this shirt.
The intention isn't to make another generic cartoon T-shirt. It's to celebrate the strange visual personality of a character that most people have probably never encountered.
That's what makes obscure animation history so much fun. Before today's familiar cartoon icons dominated popular culture, studios such as the Ub Iwerks studio were creating some remarkably inventive, bizarre and sometimes downright creepy characters.
Pincushion Man is a perfect example.
The combination of 1930s animation, surreal character design, vintage cartoon artwork and modern graphic treatment makes this shirt a natural fit for animation collectors, classic cartoon fans, vintage art enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates the weird corners of pop-culture history.
